CURRICULUM

OMFS HIGHLAND HOSPITAL
(23 MONTHS)

  • Spread across the four years of the residency, Highland Hospital provides the residents with the majority of their clinical exposure in the outpatient oral surgery clinic (dentoalveolar, implants, bone grafting, procedural sedation and anesthesia) , inpatient management, and major surgeries.

  • The Division of OMFS covers maxillofacial trauma call 365 days of the year.

OMFS KAISER PERMANENTE MEDICAL CENTER
(9 MONTHS)

  • Located at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, this rotation is completed during the third and fourth years of residency. Kaiser Permanente Medical Center is a regional referral center for orthognathic surgery, TMJ surgery, pathology, and reconstruction.

ANESTHESIA
(6 MONTHS)

  • Under the guidance of outstanding faculty in the Division of Anesthesiology, our residents obtain a broad exposure in this area.

  • 5 months of adult anesthesia at Highland Hospital 

  • 1 month of pediatric anesthesia at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland.

MEDICINE
(2 MONTHS)

  • Led by the Department of Internal Medicine, residents spend time focusing on the diagnosis, evaluation, and inpatient management of acute and chronic medical diseases.

TRAUMA SURGERY
(1 MONTH)

  • Under the guidance of UCSF Easy Bay General Surgery Faculty, the trauma team is well-respected in the region for its excellent care of trauma patients.

GENERAL SURGERY
(2 MONTHS)

  • Residents rotate with UCSF East Bay General Surgery Faculty on elective surgery and acute care surgery.

SURGICAL ICU
(1 MONTH)

  • Our residents participate as members of the Surgical ICU team  in the management of critically ill patients at Highland Hospital.

PATHOLOGY
(1 MONTH)

  • This month is a dedicated rotation with an oral and maxillofacial pathologist.

PLASTIC SURGERY
(1 MONTH)

  • Exposure to core plastic surgery through our collaborating Highland plastic surgeons.

CONFERENCES & SEMINARS

Embedded in the curriculum throughout the four years of residency, the following conferences are held on a weekly or monthly basis: case conference, joint UCSF-Highland Hospital case presentation teleconference, grand rounds, morbidity and mortality, journal club, implant conference.
